What If You Woke Up Tomorrow With Only What You Thanked God for Today?
I have a sign on my wall in my living room that states this, displayed above a prayer board. It often reminds me to thank God for everything, because you never know when something will be taken away. It helps me recognize how precious each thing is, even the little moments. On days when I feel like I can’t go on or don’t feel particularly blessed, it serves as a reminder that even those days have things worth being thankful for.
Giving thanks to God can be as simple as saying, “Thank you, God, for what you have given me,” or as specific as, “Thank you, God, for giving me [specific blessings].” It’s not about how you do it—it’s about responding to God with a heart of gratitude. Some days, you might not even feel it. Trust me, I’ve been there.
There are days when life feels so overwhelming that giving thanks feels like the last thing you can manage. Everything seems to be going wrong, and it feels impossible to muster up gratitude. On the other hand, there are days when you can’t stop thanking God. Those are the days when blessings seem to pour out endlessly, and your heart is overflowing with thanksgiving.
Sometimes my prayer is as simple as, “Thank you, God, for the abundant blessings I have,” and that’s it. Other days, I spend hours telling Him everything I’m thankful for. And then there are days when my prayer is, “God, I don’t even know what to be thankful for, but thank You anyway.”
No matter the day, thanksgiving starts in the heart.
Thanksgiving Is a Heart Posture
Thanksgiving isn’t about a long list or eloquent words—it’s about the posture of your heart. It’s a way to present yourself humbly before the King, opening your heart to see the blessings in front of you. It’s a heart posture that says, “I don’t deserve this, but You give it anyway.”
This humility reminds us of who we rely on and where our blessings come from. When you view thanksgiving through the lens of the quote—What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you thanked God for today?—it shifts your perspective. Why? Because suddenly, your eyes are opened to how much God has already given and how He continues to provide.
Thanksgiving is sitting in the throne room of grace, holding all your trophies and blessings, and saying, “This is all from You, and I am thankful for it. I don’t deserve it, but I thank You for giving it anyway.”
Reflect and Respond
So, let me ask you: What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things you thanked God for today? Would your life look the same, or would it look drastically different? Where is your heart postured?
Gratitude is a practice, but it’s also a perspective—a lens through which we see God’s love and provision. Whether it’s a small, whispered prayer of thanks or an outpouring of hours spent listing blessings, every moment of gratitude counts. Let’s strive to live each day in thanksgiving, with hearts postured toward the One who gives us all things.
