Visio Divina
Visio Divina is a form of prayer and worship that uses art as its medium. These photos, some famous artworks and others personal photos, are good starts to this process. Unlike its sister Lectio Divina, Visio Divina uses art as a way to connect to God. It is done with no words, just silence before the Lord, contemplating an image with the Lord to see how He will move. Use these photos and steps to engage the works below.
Tips:
Have a voice recorder to verbalize what you feel God saying or to pray out loud with.
Always enter in with a journal handy!
Steps to Engaging this Sacred Art
1. Identify which image you desire to engage with
2. Pray before entering into the sacred space. Asking God to reveal Himself afresh in the art and bless the time you are about to engage with.
3. Sit with the picture, either printed or on a device. Simply sit in silence with the photo, and let God speak into the space of silence. I recommend locking yourself in on the first thing you notice and try not to wander around at the start of it.
4. Unlock your gaze from the first thing you noticed and start taking a slow look at the entire image. Consider asking: what is God saying in this piece of art? What emotions are being evoked? Does it lead you anywhere?
5. Once you are comfortable moving on, pray to end your session with the piece and finish in a contemplative time.
